Yellow Trays? Tackle Stained Invisalign Attachments & Aligners!
POsitively Awesome Ortho with Pachter Orthodontics
Are those clear aligners starting to look less “invisible” and more “yellow-tinted lenses”? Maybe you didn’t remove your aligners during your coffee break or forgot to give them a post-meal scrub. Whatever the reason, you want your pearly white look back pronto!
Don’t worry, Invisalign fam. Everyone slips up at some point during orthodontic treatment! We see a lot of trays and attachments in our practice, and stains are more common than you’d imagine. Luckily, we’re experts in wearing Invisalign, DIY methods to remove stains, and overall oral health. Let’s break down how those sneaky stains happen and how YOU can kick them to the curb.
How Do Clear Aligners and Invisalign Attachments Stain?
Aligners should be crystal clear, not clearly cloudy. However, staining can happen — no judgment from us! Here’s a peek at the usual suspects.
Eating or Drinking? Aligners, Snacks, and Sips Shouldn’t Meet. We love a delicious drink as much as you do, but darker beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, soda, and anything super pigmented can leave their mark on your Invisalign trays. Steer clear of anything colorful when you’re sporting those aligners.
Don’t Give Your Cleaning Routine the Run-Around. Forgot to brush before popping your trays in? Skipped giving them a quick rinse? Over time, leftover plaque build-up and food debris from poor oral hygiene can turn into yellow Invisalign stains and haze. Maintaining sparkling oral health is a huge part of the Invisalign care guidelines.
This is a No Smoking (or Chewing Tobacco) Area! Habitual smoking is a surefire way to keep you from your perfect smile. You’ll encounter stains, halitosis, and more issues with your dental health. Smoking isn’t just tough on your overall health —it’s one of the fastest ways to make your Invisalign trays turn yellow.
DIY Ways to Get Your Invisalign Aligners in Shape
Ready to show your Invisalign stains who’s boss? Restoring Invisalign appliances is easy. Here are our favorite safe and simple ways to clean your Invisalign system!
Clear Aligner Cleaning Products: Give your trays a good soak (approximately 20 minutes) with a dentist-approved, retainer-safe cleaner. Invisalign cleaning crystals are designed specifically to tackle discoloration and bad odors, but there are plenty of denture cleaners you can pick up at the store.
Hydrogen Peroxide: You can also make a 1:1 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Soaking your aligners for about 30 minutes will disinfect them, break up debris, and help with tough staining.
Ultrasonic Cleaner: Ultrasonic cleaners are special devices that use sound waves to break up stubborn crud with tiny bubbles. It may sound a little silly, but it’s a gentle and highly effective method to deep clean your Invisalign trays!
Avoid Staining Invisalign Attachments from the Start
Now let’s talk about Invisalign attachments—those tiny, tooth-colored buttons bonded to your teeth that help guide the movement of your aligners. These little helpers are magical, but they can stain, too. However, since they are stuck onto your tooth, there isn’t a convenient cleaner that can make those stains disappear.
The best option is to avoid stains in the first place. The primary suspects for attachment staining are the same as those for aligners. However, that should make it easy to avoid stain problems!
So, if you run into coffee, tea, or dark alcoholic beverages, just brush your teeth afterward. And don’t neglect your oral hygiene routine, or you might find that your aligner trays and Invisalign attachments are at risk.
