Big Day Ahead! Get Prepped for Your First Appointment
Before you even sit in the orthodontic chair, there are a few things to check off your to-do list to ensure youโre ready for treatment.
โ
Make a list of questions! Whatโs the deal with clear aligners versus braces? How long will treatment take? Whatโs a crossbite? Write it all down! Your first appointment is the perfect time to get all your questions answered.
โ
Gather dental and medical history! Your orthodontist needs to know about previous dental work, medical conditions, or bad habits (like grinding) to build the best treatment plan for you. (Sometimes, your ortho and your dentist can swap dental details.)
โ
Ask about finances upfront! Want to know how much you’re investing in your smile? Be sure to ask about pricing, insurance coverage, and payment plans so there are no surprises.
At Pachter Orthodontics, our team will walk you through all these steps during your consultationโand itโll be a party from start to finish!
The Starting Line: Adjusting to Life with Braces or Aligners
Your mouth has a lot to get used to. Your top teeth and bottom teeth will be on the move, and youโll likely feel some tenderness. But hereโs the good news: weโve learned a thing or two about managing orthodontic newbie aches and pains.
Ortho wax = your new BFF. If braces rub against your cheeks or gums, orthodontic wax works wonders. Just pop a little on the troublesome bracket or archwire, and boomโinstant comfort. Dental wax isnโt just for traditional metal braces, though. Invisalign trays can also have rough spots, which can be covered like metal brackets.
Whether you have braces or Invisalign clear aligner trays, your teeth wonโt be super excited to chew stuff. For the first few days, stick to softer foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and pasta to keep things comfy. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky snacks that can cause discomfort, irritate sore spots, or damage your braces.
We have more on this later, but weโll say it here too. (Itโs that important!) This is the time to up your hygiene game! Special ortho-friendly toothbrushes and flossers make cleaning around braces brackets and archwires way easier.
Metal Braces and Clear Aligner Trays are a No-Plaque Zone
Braces are pros at hiding food for bacteria baddies, and aligners trap food particles and plaque against your teeth like itโs their job. What can we do??
Great results start with the basics: brushing and flossing! While your orthodontic appliances are straightening teeth, youโre in charge of keeping away the bacteria, plaque, and gum issues that will slow down treatment. Toothbrushing helps prevent cavities, decay, gum disease, and funky breath, while flossing gets into spots your toothbrush canโt. Brush your teeth every time you eat, and floss at least once daily!
Another thing – Your orthodontic check-ins are super important for ensuring your treatment is on track. However, donโt ditch your regular dentist visitsโcheckups and cleanings are essential! By keeping up with oral hygiene, your braces or aligners will do their job more efficiently, and youโll also build great oral hygiene habits for the time after treatment.
Congrats! Now Youโre Ready for ANYTHING.
